Simple Life Hacks To Help You Stay Your Best!

Dr. Caren Fortin, BHK, DC
Doctor of Chiropractic

Dr Caren Fortin DCWe all know that a New Year brings opportunity to change ourselves for the better. Start fresh. Make healthier choices. However, one of the biggest obstacles that we all face when we are trying to make those changes (and at any time for that matter) is TIME! We find it difficult to schedule a workout, make healthier meals, take time for ourselves and often, as a result, those changes don’t happen.

As a chiropractor, one of my recommendations for making better choices will often include patient self-care such as some exercise, stretching and heat or ice application to an area of injury. Guess what? I get many answers explaining, “I didn’t have time” or “I forgot because it’s not in my routine.” I get it. I understand. However, I am encouraging you to use some simple items that you likely have in your home to accomplish that self-care.

  1. Golf Balls
It turns out that these petite dimpled balls can be used for more than a game-winning putt. Just roll the ball under your foot while seated to help relieve tension in sore feet.

  2. Tennis Balls
Standing against a wall, place a tennis ball between your back and the wall. Slowly move up and down or side to side to help work out tension in your back or shoulders.

  3. self-careFrozen Peas
Forget expensive ice packs. Frozen vegetables are a great alternative and will form to fit different parts of your body.

  4. Rolling Pin
Tight thigh muscles are common in runners, walkers and other athletes. Roll a rolling pin up and down along the front or side of your thigh to help relieve this tension.

  5. Towel
If you sit at a desk all day, you may feel tension in your back or chest from slouching. To help relieve the pain, place a rolled towel on the floor. Sit at one end, facing away from the roll. Slowly lay back so that the roll is under your spine, supporting you from the neck to the lower back. Relax in this position for one minute, feeling a stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders. To avoid straining your neck while in this position, rest your head on the roll or place a pillow at the end of the roll for more support.

While these hacks may not eliminate your pains completely, they can help ease some discomfort in the moment. At your next visit with your chiropractor at Wellness for the Body, mention your area of complaint for a diagnosis and plan of care. Call 905.465.4595 to book an appointment.

5 Steps to Kick-Start Your New Year’s Resolutions

Amanda McNair
Certified Life & Wellness Coach

Amanda McNairMany people use January 1st to represent the perfect time for a fresh start. To start over, start something new, quit a bad habit, ditch something that wasn't of value – essentially, a clean slate.

But the truth is, we can create that fresh start at any moment we choose.

Literally. Any. Moment.

It's a choice. You simply make up your mind and you commit to it.

That being said, have you considered any New Year's resolutions?

Maybe to feel better more often? To lose those last 10 pounds? To build your business? To "get yourself together"?

I issue you a challenge to start TODAY to work towards your goals.

(But remember, even if days, weeks or months go by and you realize you have forgotten to work on your resolutions, you’re still able to start them back up at the moment you choose.)

Let’s start working on those resolutions right here, right now.

Here are 5 simple steps to get you started:

  1. Take away all your distractions: shut down your computer, put your phone in another room, turn off the TV, move to a room where you're in your own space.

  2. Open your journal and write these three things, one at the top of each page so you have a whole page to free-flow on each question:

    • What is the most important goal to bring more value to my life?
    • When will I achieve this goal?
    • How will I get myself there?

  3. new year resolutionsWhen you consider committing to this goal, think about WHY you want to achieve this goal. What will having that outcome do for you? How will it bring value to your life? How will you know when you've accomplished it? What will be different for you? Who will be positively affected by your conquering this goal? How will you feel about yourself when you reach your goal?

  4. When you put a timeline to your goal for achieving it, be realistic. This is about getting curious, not placing judgement on yourself. What do you feel is a realistic timeline for you to accomplish your goal? Then, if you want to challenge yourself a little further, decide on a best-case scenario timeline that has you completing your goal ahead of your original schedule. This can provide encouragement along the way to choose to step up your game.

  5. Finally, how will you get yourself there? This step is the hardest but it's important you don't skip it. List at least 10 ways you can contribute towards reaching your goal. If you want to get really serious with yourself, list at least 25 ways you can get yourself to where you want to be. Nothing is off limits. Don't worry about "how you'll do the how," just compile your list and let the ideas flow. This gives you a major leg up because if you try one thing from your list and it doesn't work, you have at least nine other ways to make it happen!

Once you've finished the above activity, choose one thing from your list and commit to doing it TODAY.

Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Not when you find the time. Today.

Taking action right away creates momentum to keep you moving forward.

If you need some support, accountability and guidance with your resolutions, then your first action step can be scheduling your free 30-minute coaching consultation today. Call Wellness for the Body at 905.465.4595. Let's get you where you want to be!

10 Facts About Massage Therapy

Takhir Almazbekov, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Takhir Almazbekov RMTFor many centuries, massage has been used as an effective method for treatment and recovery of patients’ health. In modern medicine, this direction is given much attention. So, here are 10 facts about massage that will be interesting to learn.

  1. The usual light touch of the palm can work wonders, namely to slow down the heart rate and lower blood pressure. This principle is based on the effect of stroking massage. The body calms down, stress is removed and stroking by hands affects primarily the nervous system.

  2. Humpback whales weigh more than 50 tons, reach 20 meters in length and even they cannot neglect the stroking effect. For hours, these large creatures keep their heads above the water for the sake of caressing and “petting”. The principle of stroking calms them and is pleasant to many animals.

  3. The history of massage begins even before our era. One of the ancient sources is the Chinese book of kon-fu in which not only wrestling methods are collected but also methods of treatment by massage of dislocations and muscle spasms. For millennia, the knowledge and skills of massage techniques have been kept and passed exclusively by clergymen.

  4. After heavy physical exertion or playing sports, it is recommended to have a massage. Lactic acid is released from the muscles, and under the influence of the massage, it is more easily removed. If one follows this recommendation, the next morning will be painless and he or she will feel refreshed.

  5. relaxing massage therapyRecent medical studies have confirmed that massage improves the growth and development of newborns. Pediatricians prescribe massage to all premature babies and those with physical disabilities. It is proved that the process of rehabilitation of children has the best results with a regular massage.

  6. Veterinarians have also started using massage extensively. Australian scientists conducted a farm experiment with piglets. Regular massaging of the back of piglets accelerated the growth of animals by 35%.

  7. Massage has many useful effects for human health. For therapeutic purposes, massage is used to treat somatic diseases (asthma, rheumatism, hypertension, etc.).

  8. If, after a massage session, one feels thirsty and has frequent urination, this indicates a favorable outcome of treatment and a rapid recovery of the body.

  9. The body and skin are cleansed and restored after a massage, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated.

  10. Head massage not only relieves stress and tension but it also reduces headaches and stimulates hair growth.

Massage is not only useful and pleasant but many Eastern sages saw the secret of health and longevity in it! Call Wellness For The Body at 905.465.4595 to book your next massage.
