An Introduction to the Psoas Muscle

Dr. Caren Fortin, BHK, DC
Doctor of Chiropractic

Dr Caren Fortin DCMeet the Psoas (So-as) muscle, one of my personal favourites, and what I feel is one of the most important muscles in the body. It can be a contributor to back pain, hip pain, mid back pain and groin pain to name a few.

Let’s talk a little about where the psoas muscles attach. They start on the 12th thoracic vertebrae and along the 5 lumbar vertebrae. They pass anteriorly through the pelvis and end up attaching on the femurs. They are large, deep muscles that are palpated through the abdomen area.

They play significant roles in our everyday life. For one, they are hip flexors. They allow you to bend your hips and legs towards your chest. They also help you bend forward. Secondly, they are also part of your inner core and help to support and stabilize the body in various positions. Thirdly, and I feel strongly that this is a very important point, the psoas muscles play a role in our stress response.

What was not identified earlier in its attachment description, is that the psoas muscles have an intimate connection to the diaphragm, which is our big breather muscle. In times of sudden fear or excitement, the psoas muscles contract. Sooo… in times of prolonged stress, the psoas is continually being demanded upon. Its effect is the same as if we have been running, walking, squatting or lunging for long periods. Even sitting for long periods (whether sitting at a desk or a long commute), or assuming a fetal position when sleeping can create similar symptoms.

If any of the above applies to you or if you are having some low back or hip pain, I would encourage you to get the area assessed, hopefully including psoas muscle palpation and evaluation. Without getting too detailed, as patients will have individual treatment needs, some treatment focusing on the psoas area, as well as some breathing exercises, might be what you need to kick start yourself into moving better and living pain free.

Reiki: Love, Harmony and Healing

Lisa J. Rutherford, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Lisa J. Rutherford RMT In traditional western Usui teachings, Reiki is translated as “universal life force”. Reiki is the vibration of love, harmony and healing.

People have always been aware of the existence in nature of a power which they called mana, Baraka, chi, ki, prana etc. This power can be stored, acquired, manipulated, transmitted or harnessed for both good and bad purposes.

Reiki is different from this power because it is “light infused Ki.” It cannot be manipulated according to anyone’s selfish desires and it can do no harm. It can only bring about love, harmony and healing.

“Hands on healing” is a natural healing method which has existed since ancient times. Some people have become aware of a mysterious force radiating from the palms of their hands. Most of us turn to it instinctively such as when we have a headache, stomach ache or injured body part, we put our hands on the affected area.

In Reiki, this ability is made accessible by means of attunements given by a master/teacher. Attunements open the energetic channel in the student and sensitize him/her to the vibration of Reiki.

Reiki can be learned by anyone with a desire to establish a permanent connection with the consciousness and with the rhythm and flow of the universe.

A few Reiki characteristics:

  • reiki loveAddresses mind, body and soul (spirit)
  • We make ourselves and others happy through the practice of love and harmony
  • Works on deep levels such as trauma and karma
  • No mental ability is needed; we do not need to concentrate on the energy for it to flow or to consciously direct it through forced intention
  • Both the healer and the person being healed receive these benefits
  • The energy flows whether we believe in it or not

The purpose of Reiki:

  • Physical healing and complete relaxation
  • Energy healing brings relief to the body, mind and emotions
  • Spiritual healing connects us with universal consciousness

As a Reiki practitioner, I am to live my life by certain standards:

  • Just for today, do not anger
  • Do not worry
  • Be thankful
  • Work with diligence (do not harm)
  • Be kind to people

Reiki has improved my life by utilizing the positive Reiki energy in my everyday living:

  • Helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression
  • Increases my ability to connect with my clients
  • Promotes positive emotional and physical healing

If Reiki sounds like a therapy you would like to experience, I welcome you to book a thirty or sixty minute session with me. A combination session of Reiki and Registered Massage Therapy is also available (see pricing: www.wellnessforthebody.com/services.html).

“Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy, unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you.” -- Ralph Marston
