The Case for Turning Off Your Phone

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Doctor of Chiropractic
Acupuncture & Graston Technique Provider

dr shima shahidyIt’s hard to go anywhere without seeing someone hunched over a phone or tablet. In a relatively short time period, our level of activity has diminished greatly as a result of our reliance on technology for both work and entertainment. We use computers all day long at work, then when we come home, we watch Netflix with a laptop on our lap and a smartphone nearby. We are constantly touching, holding and, yes, even sleeping with our devices. To make matters worse, our children are watching and mimicking us. On our end as practitioners, we are seeing postural problems and aches and pains in younger populations along with increasing obesity as a result of sedentary lifestyles. Here is a list of the negative side effects from excessive use of these devices and then some tactics to minimize your exposure.

  • Exposure to Wi-Fi - Many European countries have banned the use of Wi-Fi in areas where young children spend a lot of their time, such as schools. The long term effects of this constant exposure are unknown and potentially dangerous.
  • Disconnected/detached from others - While social media alleges to help us “connect,” what often happens is that we forgo face to face interaction with loved ones as we spend more time on our devices. Instead of experiencing our lives, we are often behind the camera.
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Eye strain
  • digi thumb text neckSleeplessness
  • Neck pain and headaches
  • Decrease in physical activity

What can you do to combat this addiction?

  • Set boundaries for work and personal time.
  • Make sure you have leisure physical activity built in to your day. Something as simple as a walk with the kids will be good for your physical and emotional health.
  • Set time limits for and monitor children’s use of devices.
  • Have a no device rule for family time such as during dinner or when doing an activity together.
  • When recharging, turn the phone off and charge it in another room.
  • Use an old school alarm clock for the mornings.
  • Resist handing your toddler a phone or tablet. Children learn best through active play; minimize screen time to help them avoid bad habits and develop good ones instead.

Hot Stone Therapy is Not Just a Luxury

Shawna Klein, RMT, PTS
Registered Massage Therapist

A therapeutic massage is a holistic alternative for your health and wellbeing. It is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. Hot Stone Therapy is more than a spa-like treatment; it also offers many benefits with a real emphasis on relaxation, healing and grounding.

Hot Stone Therapy is an effective treatment that involves deep penetrating heat from basalt stones along with Swedish massage techniques. The heated stones may be placed on various parts of the body to improve the flow of energy into the body. The heated stones also allow the muscles to relax and respond to tension release without the misconception that pain is necessary to reduce muscle tension.
