Wellness for the Body is running events and workshops to help connect our clients and broader community with health and wellness information. August 6 - Backpack Consults at The Lake Walk
Bring the kids to The Lake Walk on Thursday, August 6th for free drop-in backpack safety consults with our chiropractors starting at 6pm just outside the clinic. Learn the correct way to choose, pack, lift, and carry a backpack. There will be giveaways for the kids and info packs for the parents to take home! As part of the Lake Walk, we will also have a featured artist working on a painting right in front of the clinic! August 13 - Donate Blood with us
Members of our wellness team are donating blood on Thursday, August 13th. The blood bank is in need of donations right now, so join us in giving the gift of life! The blood drive is 3-7pm at The Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre (2302 Bridge Rd, Oakville, ON). Visit blood.ca to book your appointment.
September 5 – Intro to Yoga Workshop
Have you tried yoga before? Now's your chance! Andrei Neagoie is joining Wellness for the Body for this special FREE Introduction to Yoga Workshop on Saturday, September 5th at 2pm. The workshop will be held in Taste of Colombia's "El Salon" studio space that they have generously donated (67 Bronte Road - Unit 3, Oakville, L6L 3B7). September 21 – Wellness for the Body’s 10th Anniversary Party!
Join us in celebrating our 10th Anniversary on Monday, September 21st in the Blue Room at The Harbour Banquet & Conference Centre (2340 Ontario Street, Oakville). My Pan Am Games Experience

As some of you may know, Dr. Shima and I both volunteered as part of the medical team at the Toronto Pan Am Games this past month. It made for a very busy beginning to the month of July, balancing work, volunteer and family life. Being part of the medical team was a great experience; I not only had the opportunity to provide treatment to national level athletes, but I also met and worked with some wonderful practitioners from various health fields. 

dr tara pan am gamesAs a medical volunteer, I spent the majority of my time at the Etobicoke Olympium, which was the training facility for water polo, swimming and rhythmic gymnastics. Most of my time was spent standing on the pool deck watching the teams as they practiced. I had to keep a constant watch in case of an injury during play. One highlight was when I treated the goalie from the Cuban water polo team. He did not speak one word of English, which made it very difficult to interpret what had happened to him. Luckily for me, a Spanish interpreter was travelling with the team while they were in Toronto; once she arrived on the scene, we were able to work together in order to help him out! He was very happy afterwards and even gave each practitioner and the interpreter a kiss on the cheek to say thanks!

I also spent one shift during a training day at the Centennial Park BMX bike facility. BMX is considered the second most dangerous sport in the Pan Am Games. Only one major injury (a broken collar bone) occurred that day, which unfortunately left the athlete unable to compete in the final competition. The last place I spent a shift at was the Mississauga Sports Centre, providing care to judo athletes. I also had the experience of sitting sideline of the competition floor during medal rounds! I saw two Canadians compete where they each earned silver. Go Canada Go!

I was very grateful for the opportunity to be a medical volunteer at the Pan Am Games and it has certainly sparked my interest to continue volunteering as a medical practitioner at international events in the future!

The Importance of Stretching

Dara Komor RMTMassage therapists tell clients all the time to stretch after a massage and increase water intake. Most clients follow that advice for a few days and then eventually forget about this important routine. Many clients only remember the importance of stretching at their next massage appointment, and they end up feeling like they let themselves down. This article is to remind us all just how important and beneficial stretching can be.

The benefit of a good stretch is that it may help increase flexibility, which helps increase the health of joints. When joints are moving properly, it decreases the risk of injury and the muscles are working more effectively. Another benefit to stretching is increased muscle health due to the increased blood flow to the muscles.

Clients can ask their massage therapist what stretches are best and then practice them in front of the therapist to ensure they are being done properly. A good stretch should not hurt; bring the stretch to a point where you can just feel it, then hold it for as long as you can. I tell my clients to find a comfortable position on the floor and practice the stretch for 2 to 5 minutes.

A perfect example of someone who reaps the benefits of stretching is a client of mine who works sitting at a desk all day. In their spare time they are very active: running, cycling, rock climbing, and skiing are a few of his hobbies. Due to their consistent stretching routine, as their massage therapist, I am able to truly work on their problem areas due to the other muscles being healthy and pain-free. They are able to continue a rigorous lifestyle largely due to their dedication to daily stretching.

Healthy muscles at rest should be pain free and pliable. If muscles are tight, this can result in a painful massage. It is recommended that we all stretch daily in order to maintain the stretch, length and increased range of motion achieved with massage therapy. With both the client and the massage therapist working at this maintenance, the client will most likely have healthier muscles.

In closing, I’ll tell you what I tell my clients: “If you stretch more, you’ll more than likely see less of me!”
