dr shima shahidyBoth of our Chiropractors, Dr. Shima Shahidy and Dr. Tara Brown, are excited to be volunteering on the medical team for the Pan Am games this month. They are still working at the clinic with some minor changes to Dr. Tara's schedule. We recommend booking your chiropractic appointments in advance to secure your ideal time slots!

Please note that Dr. Shima will be away from July 20 to August 5. To accommodate this vacation time, Dr. Tara will be adding additional hours and you can make your appointments with her during this time.

Finding the Right Pillow for You

Trying to sleep on the wrong pillow can keep you up all night! Trying to find the right pillow for you can be just as exhausting with so many shape, size and fill options. To help you decide what kind of pillow will fit you and your needs the best, here are some tips from the Ontario Chiropractic Association:

A Good Pillow

A good pillow for sleeping should be comfortable to lay your head upon, but most importantly it must support your neck keeping it in alignment with the rest of your spine. There are many different pillows on the market today from traditional feather and fiber ones to shaped pillows, memory foam and buckwheat pillows. It can be difficult to know what to choose.

There is no one “best” pillow for everyone. Try these tips to pick the pillow that’s right for you.

  • Choose a size of pillow suitable for your body size or frame. The pillow should cover the entire back of your neck to avoid putting pressure on your spine.
  • Try out the pillow. Most pillows are packaged in a plastic wrapper so you can lay it on a display bed in the store and put your head on it. This is the best way to find out if you are on the right track.
  • A hypoallergenic pillow is a must if you suffer from allergies, but it is also a good choice for anyone.
  • Buckwheat filled pillows have become increasingly popular. Buckwheat is hypoallergenic, it will mold to the contours of your head and neck providing good support, but it will also change shape when you move.

A good quality, supportive pillow provides many benefits including a better night’s sleep, improved circulation, fewer aches and pains and even reduced snoring. Take your time and choose carefully. Your neck and back will thank you for it!

Getting The Most Out of Your Massage Treatment

Jacki HigenbottamIf you are coming in for regular massage therapy treatments, you are already benefitting tremendously in terms of your health and overall wellbeing. In addition to coming in regularly, there are a number of things that you can do to increase the benefits of each massage therapy session. The following list is our top six ways to get the most out of your massage treatment!

Communicate with your massage therapist:

  • Be sure to fill out your health history form accurately with up to date information on medications, surgeries and current state of health.
  • Inform your massage therapist of expectations and reasons for your massage (whether for relaxation or specific treatment).
  • Notify your massage therapist if the pressure you are receiving is too little or too much and they will gladly adjust. It is very important to communicate about pressure before and during the treatment so that your massage therapist will know your preferences.
  • If you are uncomfortable on the table because of positioning, let your massage therapist know so you can continue the rest of your treatment in comfort.
  • Feel free to tell your massage therapist if the music is too loud or too distracting and you prefer silence – the choice is all yours.
  • Give feedback to your massage therapist about the pace at which they are working. All massage therapists work differently, so a certain pace style might not be suitable for you – feel free to ask your therapist to slow down or speed up.
  • Some people like to talk to their massage therapist during the treatment – let your RMT know what you prefer.
  • Allergies to oils, lotions, or essential oils are common, so please advise your massage therapist if there are any allergies they should know about.


  • People often stop or limit their breathing when they feel anxious or a tender spot is being manipulated. Remember to breathe normally during your treatment as breathing helps to facilitate relaxation.

Relax your muscles and your mind:

  • Tightening up or hardening your muscles during a massage can counter the benefits of the treatment. Let your massage therapist know if this is happening as they may need to adjust the technique or pressure.

Drink extra water before and after the massage treatment:

  • It is important to rehydrate your cells after a massage treatment. Drinking water also helps flush toxins from your body.

Take your time getting off the massage table:

  • Being careful when you get off the table is even more important for those who have been positioned face down for the duration of their treatment. If you feel dizzy when getting up, please take a minute before getting off the table.

Be sure to schedule a follow up massage session:

  • The benefits of a massage treatment are cumulative, so the more often you receive treatment, the more quickly your body will respond. From one session to the next, relaxation deepens as the chronic patterns of stress in the body are interrupted and released.

Rise and Shine!

Andrea AntayaI don’t know about you, but lately I find it hard to wake up in the morning. This is usually a great time to meditate; however, I have recently discovered I can fall sleep while sitting! To avoid this problem, I started using a self-massage routine outlined in one of my favorite books, “The Way of Qigong” by Kenneth S. Cohen. Below is a list of my favorite exercises to help you start your mornings with more energy and purpose!

All you have to do is sit up and start...


  • Rub your hands together to warm them up and gather your energy. Next, rub your face/scalp with the palms of your hands and then go back and forth across your forehead with one palm 10 times.
  • Using your middle finger, rub along the outside of your nose all the way up to your forehead and back down to the chin 10 times. Still using the middle finger, lightly rub around your eyes going clockwise and then counter clockwise 10 times.
  • Lightly tap around your mouth to stimulate your gums.
  • Using your index finger and thumb, lightly roll your earlobes to stimulate the whole body.

Arms and Legs

  • Using your right hand, rub up the outside of your left arm from fingers to shoulder. Then rub down the inside of the arm from armpit to fingers. Repeat up to 10 times and again on the other side.
  • For the leg, you can do both at once. Rub up the inside of the legs from toes to inner thigh and then down the outside of the leg from hip to toes. Repeat up to 10 times.
  • These exercises for the arms and legs help stimulate many of the major meridian lines in the body and encourage their proper flow.

Abdomen and Back

  • For the abdomen, put one hand above the belly button and one below and make small circles in the opposite directions. Switch hands (the one above now goes below and vice versa) and repeat circular motion.
  • For the back, use your hands, either palms or tops (depending on what is easiest), and rub in a circular motion to stimulate the kidneys.
  • Make a light fist and gently tap around the lowest part of your back and hips to stimulate circulation.


  • This next exercise is great for increasing energy and stimulating the whole body. If you only have a little time, try doing this one on its own.
  • Cross one foot over the opposite thigh and pull back the toes to give the arch a good stretch. Using the other hand, rub the palm back and forth across the arch vigorously 50 times. Repeat on the opposite foot
