Chiropractic Treatment for Whiplash

Dr. Tara Brown, (Hon) BA Kin, DC, ART®, D.Ac
Doctor of Chiropractic
Active Release Techniques, Acupuncture & Graston Technique Provider

dr tara brownWhiplash is a term used to describe an injury to the neck that occurs following a motor vehicle or car accident. Depending on the force and direction of impact, various areas of the neck can be affected. These areas include bone, ligaments, tendons, muscles, neurological structures and other connective tissue, all of which can lead to discomfort in any area of the body.

Chiropractic care is an effective treatment option for whiplash injuries. Since each case of whiplash is different, the specific chiropractic treatment provided will vary. The appropriate treatment given is decided by the chiropractor, following a thorough history and physical examination.

Various treatment options include:

  1. Chiropractic manipulation or adjustment: This is the primary treatment for joint dysfunction. The forceful whipping motion that occurs during a car accident can lead to joints (in the neck, upper back, or low back) locking up. As a result, this makes it difficult for a person to move properly. Chiropractic adjustments can restore normal movement, remove pressure from the nerves, and reduce inflammation.
  2. Mobilizations: Another method used to increase joint motion in an area that may be limited or restricted.
  3. Active Release Technique or Soft Tissue Therapy: This form of treatment addresses the muscles, ligaments and tendons strained/sprained in a whiplash injury. This is used to reduce any increased tension or spasm in these tissues.
  4. whiplash car accidentAcupuncture: An effective treatment option that can be used to treat any of the affected tissues. Acupuncture helps speed up healing by bringing blood to the area, decreasing inflammation, and reducing pain/spasm. It is especially effective for those experiencing any referral pain from nerves.
  5. Graston Technique: Patented stainless-steel instruments are used to detect and treat soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. This technique reduces pain and restores function. It is especially effective in those who have been suffering from whiplash symptoms for many years following their injury.
  6. Stretches and Exercises: These are prescribed by your chiropractor to help strengthen any muscles that are weak and loosen any muscles that are tight.

A comprehensive whiplash treatment plan developed by your chiropractor may include one or more of these approaches. As well, depending on your specific injuries and level of discomfort, other techniques may be recommended. If you or anyone you know is suffering from a whiplash injury, contact the clinic today to find out if chiropractic treatment is right for you!

Top Five Reasons To Get an Indie Head Massage Treatment

Calais Irwin RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Calais Irwin RMTIndie head massage is an ancient practice that began in India over 5000 years ago. It is based on Ayurveda, which is traditional Hindu medicine. Head, face and scalp massages were designed to release energy from Marma Points. These points are found all over the body but there is a high concentration of them in the head and face. There are many benefits to this treatment, but here are our top five reasons for getting an Indie Head Massage:

  1. It can be combined with massage therapy! Indie head massage actually encompasses two different treatments: one focuses on the face, the other is for the scalp and hair. Each treatment on its own is booked as a 30 minute appointment, but you can choose to have both treatments for a 60 minute appointment, or combine one or both treatments with regular massage therapy.
  2. It’s good for your hair! The hair and scalp treatment lubricates and conditions the scalp while strengthening and nourishing the hair shaft, which promotes new hair growth. Not to mention the benefit of soft and silky hair!
  3. It’s covered by many benefit plans! The treatment is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist, and can be billed as such. So if you have massage therapy coverage with your extended health benefits, you can claim this amazing relaxation treatment.
  4. It’s relaxing! The slow pace of the face treatment increases relaxation and allows you to fully let go of tension, often to the point of drifting in and out of sleep.
  5. It just feels really great! You know that amazing feeling when your scalp is being massaged at the hair salon? The Indie Head Massage hair and scalp treatment is like an extension of that bliss, lasting for 30 minutes, lying on a cozy massage table and done with warm, soothing oil.

One last great reason to get an Indie head massage is the healing it can provide for your body and mind. These healing benefits may include improvements to blood circulation, mental clarity and concentration, sleep quality, and lymphatic drainage. The treatments may also help with stress, migraines, facial pain, sinus headaches, Bell’s palsy, depression, anxiety, and psoriasis of the scalp.

Feeling Yucky? Need to Detox?

Normally your body can naturally detoxify itself, but it becomes “toxic” when it can no longer clear all the metabolic waste products, environmental chemicals and the food we eat in the Standard American Diet. When the threshold is crossed and your body can no longer clear everything efficiently, all of your cells can be affected - making you sick.

Could You be Toxic?
spring cleanse detoxA host of symptoms are associated with toxicity, which help you identify if your system needs to be cleansed. These symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue or energy crashes throughout the day
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Headaches, difficulty focusing or mental fog
  • Bloating or fluid retention
  • Food cravings - especially for sugar or salt
  • Digestive problems - constipation, diarrhea, gas or bloating
  • Skin problems - acne, eczema, psoriasis
  • Difficulty sleeping, waking throughout the night
  • Body or joint aches and pains
  • Congestion, allergies and sinus issues
  • Frequent colds

There are many different types of cleanses, but healthy detoxing should not be harsh. It’s not a diet - you do not need to take drastic measures and starve yourself or restrict your food. You merely need to eat simple, whole foods while you support your body with specific vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytochemicals and fibre to promote and support the body’s detoxification processes. Cleansing can last 7 days to 6 weeks depending on your specific needs.

If you have never detoxed before, consider joining Wellness for the Body’s first group cleanse. You will be guided through a 10 day nutrition and supplement protocol to detox and clean your whole body. With the tools and support of this program, you can experience the benefits of a cleanse as the symptoms of toxicity gradually disappear.
