Are your drinking habits making you fat?

samantha ristimakiAlthough there are several proven benefits to consuming a glass of red wine a day, if your goal is to lose weight, your casual drinking habits may be preventing you from shedding those unwanted extra pounds.

Packing in the fat

The infamous beer belly is not directly the result of the calories in beer. Alcohol has a profound effect on your body’s ability to burn fat. When alcohol is broken down by the liver, it produces a chemical known as acetone. When high levels of acetone are present, the body uses them for energy instead of burning fat as fuel. This shift in energy use leaves you burning less fat and putting it into storage until the acetone levels normalize. Combining alcohol with a high fat meal is especially detrimental to your body. That late night burger and fries or pizza slice with your friends is like digesting a dinosaur when you factor in the effect of alcohol.   

Reduces testosterone levels

Alcohol can reduce testosterone levels for up to 24 hours after consumption. Women need testosterone too. It helps maintain your muscle mass which keeps your resting metabolism high. Low testosterone levels are also often also associated with increase abdominal fat.  

Increased Appetite

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that alcohol served before a meal increased appetite far more than a simple carbohydrate based drink. Another study in Demark found that when given beer to drink with a meal, men ate more than when offered a soft drink.

At the end of the day, it is important to understand the effects on your body. If you choose to drink, it’s best to do it in moderation and stick with red wine. If however your goal is to shed pounds, alcohol may be the factor that is holding you back.

What kinds of treatment can a chiropractor offer you?

dr shima shahidyThere are many treatment options available to chiropractic patients here at Wellness. All of our interventions are drug-free and hands on. Most importantly we strive to work with you and create a program of care that is best suited to your goals for optimal health and wellness. In a two part article I will summarize the treatments we can offer you and conditions for which they would be appropriate.


Traditional chiropractic treatment involves a thorough patient assessment including history and physical examination to diagnose the root of the problem and offer appropriate treatment. Techniques generally used are a combination of adjustments (high velocity, low amplitude movements), soft tissue therapy and mobilizations to restore function to the neuro-musculo-skeletal system.

The decision to use a particular technique is based on mutual understanding between the doctor and patient. Chiropractic care is effective in the treatment of headaches, neckpain, back pain, sciatica, repetitive strain injuries, whiplash, athletic injuries, and muscle sprains and strains just to name a few. Chiropractic treatment can be used to treat particular conditions but is also a useful for those who wish to adhere to a preventative model of healthcare. A large component of treatment is education on how to maintain a healthy body with lifestyle modification and appropriate exercise.


Acupuncture has its roots in 5000 years of eastern medicine, most notably Chinese. It can be used to treat many conditions including, but not limited to headaches/migraines, sciatic pain, frozen shoulder, neck and back pain, and arthritis. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very thin sterile disposable needles into specific areas of the skin which run along "meridians" or pathways. The aim is to remove "obstruction" to the flow of "qi" or vital energy, to restore function and decrease pain. Acupuncture is used alone or in conjunction with chiropractic treatment to achieve the desired affect.

Neuro-Proprioceptive Taping

This taping technique uses a flexible, latex free tape to help control muscle function, improve the body's ability to react to stimulus, improve response to inflammation and swelling, decrease pain and provide support for the joint.

This tape can be used for a variety of injuries both acute and chronic. It has great adherence but leaves no residue upon removal. It is excellent for helping athletes return to play and allows for a speedier return to work and normal daily activities.

The importance of a stretch!

andrea nederveen RMTWe have all heard our Massage Therapists or Chiropractors say to us…”Now these are the stretches you need to do at home”…and our typical reactions are…”What are the stretches and how many times should I do them”…then like a myriad of other things we should do for our bodies, we just do not stretch and our muscles end up tight and back to square one.

As massage therapists we provide a passive treatment to your muscles. We enable you to relax completely by manipulating the soft tissues of your body, something that you cannot do by yourself. However, in order to improve the health of your muscles on a daily basis, you must actively stretch and strengthen them.

A stretch is a form of temporary relief. For instance, when you get out of bed in the morning or are at your desk at work, you raise your arms in the air then bend your neck from side to side. It is a way of waking up your body. But when your body is aching because of tight muscles or repetitive strain injuries, we need to physiologically lengthen each and every muscle fibril in the muscle, and that takes at the very least 30 seconds.

A muscle is made up of many muscle fibrils and each muscle fibril contracts to move the muscle as a whole. When you have a tight muscle each muscle fibril needs to be lengthened. This is done by stretching. If you do not stretch your muscles, your range of motion will be limited and risk of injuring your muscles will be greater.

So please do not ignore your therapists when we encourage you to do some stretching as homecare. This should be a part of your daily active therapy to aid in the prevention of pain from strained muscles or the stresses of everyday living.
